Appliance spares that are no longer sold

Knobs, drawers, door catches, blades and shelf brackets for washers, dishwashers and fridges: what can be printed, in what material, and what cannot.

An appliance gets thrown away, nearly always, because of a plastic part. The motor lasts, the electronics last, and what gives is the door catch, the knob whose splines have rounded off, or the drawer support. It is precisely the scenario on-demand printing exists for.

The parts we are asked for most

  • Washer, oven and hob knobs. The knob itself rarely breaks: the internal splines round off and stop gripping the shaft. The copy is made with fresh splines.
  • Door and lid catches. The piece that clicks and keeps the door shut.
  • Detergent drawer parts: the lid, the siphon, the rail it slides on.
  • Fridge shelf and tray brackets, guides and stops. The ones that snap pulling out a loaded shelf.
  • Dishwasher basket wheels and runners, which vanish one at a time.
  • Blades, lids and jugs for discontinued blender and food-processor accessories.
  • Extractor hood and tumble dryer filters, grilles and trim.

Heat decides the material

It gets hotter inside an appliance than people assume. An oven or hob knob sits against a permanent heat source, and there ABS is the only sensible answer. A washing machine knob or a fridge shelf bracket is cold, and PETG does the job better and cheaper. If you are unsure, the right question is not which material you want but how hot the area gets: tell us that and we pick.

The rounded-off knob, in detail

It earns its own section because it is, by a distance, the number one part. The appliance shaft has a shape — a D, splines, a cross — and the knob has the negative of it. Over the years the plastic gives and the knob spins freely. What matters for copying it is not the knob: it is the shaft. Photograph the shaft head-on, measure its diameter and the width of the flat if it has one, and the fit comes out new and tight rather than as it was the day before it failed.

Is printing the part worth it, or do I buy a new appliance?

The honest comparison is between the cost of the part and the cost of the whole appliance, not between the printed part and an original spare that no longer exists. If the machine works and the only broken thing is a piece of plastic, the sum nearly always favours repairing it — and it keeps a working machine out of the skip.

Does the printed part survive dishwasher or washing machine water?

Water is not the problem: neither PETG nor ABS degrades in it. Temperature is, which is why PLA is out for any hot cycle. A PETG or ABS part copes well with the damp and the cycles of a dishwasher or washing machine.

Do you need the appliance brand and model?

It helps, mostly for checking whether an exploded diagram or a published 3D model already exists, but it is not essential. What is genuinely needed is the broken part or its dimensions: we copy what is in front of us, not a catalogue reference.
