ABS: when it is worth it and when it is asking for trouble

The highest-temperature filament we print, with its two genuine drawbacks. When to ask for it, and when PETG is enough.

ABS is the plastic of car parts, helmets and LEGO. It holds to about 95 °C without softening, it sands and paints better than any other filament, and acetone bonds it in a joint as strong as the material itself. It is also the hardest to print well, which is why many people ask for it when they do not need it.

The two genuine drawbacks

  • It shrinks as it cools. That means corners lifting off the bed and cracks between layers on tall or thick-sectioned parts. A heated enclosure and good design keep it in check, but it never fully goes away: a large flat part in ABS is always a bigger gamble than the same part in PETG.
  • It yellows in the sun. Left outside unpainted, white ABS turns cream over a summer. For visible outdoor parts, PETG ages far better.

The four cases where it wins

  1. 1Inside a car. A dashboard in August passes 60 °C without trying and can approach 80. PETG already struggles there and PLA is not an option.
  2. 2The part is going to be painted. ABS sands without clogging the paper and takes primer like no other filament. If the finish is the point, start here.
  3. 3Several pieces have to become one rigid assembly. An acetone joint melts both faces together: it is not an adhesive, it is a chemical weld.
  4. 4The part sits near a moderate heat source — a power supply, a small motor, a light fitting — and you cannot risk it sagging.

ABS sits high on heat but is neither the strongest nor the easiest. You go there for a specific reason.

Can ABS be sanded and painted?

It is the filament that takes both best. The surface accepts primer without fuss and sanding does not clog the paper the way PLA does. If you want a part that does not look printed, sanded and painted ABS is the shortest route.

Is ABS stronger than PETG?

Not across the board. ABS takes more temperature and absorbs repeated impacts better; PETG has more tensile strength and is tougher in a real printed part, because its layers bond better. If the criterion is “must not break”, PETG usually wins; if it is “must not deform in heat”, ABS does.

Why does not every workshop print ABS?

Because it needs an enclosed, temperature-stable chamber, and because it gives off fumes while printing. An open printer in a room is not the place: you get a cracked part and a smell you do not want indoors.
