Is it safe to print something that touches food?

The honest answer on printed parts and food: where the real risk is, what does not fix it, and which alternatives actually work.

It is one of our most common questions and it is almost always framed wrongly. People ask whether the material is food safe. The material is rarely the problem: PLA and PETG are made from raw materials that in other forms are used in packaging. The problem is the part.

Where the risk actually is

  1. 1The layers. An FDM part has microscopic grooves between every deposited line. Food residue and moisture get into them, a normal wash does not get them out, and that is somewhere bacteria are happy to grow.
  2. 2The dishwasher. It is what would solve the cleaning, and it is exactly what PLA cannot take: it deforms above 55 °C. A hot cycle hands the part back warped.
  3. 3The nozzle and the material path. Many nozzles are brass, which contains small proportions of lead, and the same machine has printed other materials before. The part does not come from a controlled environment like a packaging plant.
  4. 4The pigments and additives in the filament. A colour comes from pigments declared for technical use, not food use.

What does work

  • Dry, brief contact: a coffee bean scoop, a biscuit cutter touching raw dough for seconds, a fruit stand, a display. The risk here is negligible.
  • Indirect contact: the part holds the container, not the food. It solves nine out of ten of these jobs and hardly anybody proposes it.
  • Using the printed part as a master for food-grade silicone. You print the shape, cast a certified silicone mould from it, and what touches the food is the silicone.
  • A separate liner: film, baking paper, a glass vessel sitting inside the printed part.

If you want direct contact anyway

Then treat it as single-use or short-lived: PETG rather than PLA, thick walls with no exposed infill, simple geometry with no corners for things to gather in, hand washing straight after use, and replacement once it scratches. None of that makes it an approved kitchen utensil, but it is the difference between reasonable use and reckless use.

Can I print a biscuit cutter or a fondant mould?

It is one of the most reasonable uses: contact is with raw dough, lasts seconds, and the part is hand-washed straight after. It is also one of our regular jobs. Ask for PETG over PLA, with solid walls, and wash it by hand.

What about a printed cup, glass or plate?

We do not recommend it for real use. Prolonged contact, liquids, often hot, and the need to wash it thoroughly every day: precisely the combination FDM handles worst. As a display piece or a prop, fine; as tableware, no.

Does coating the part in food-grade epoxy work?

It improves cleanability because it seals the layers, but it introduces a new problem: a coating that scratches, chips or lifts stops being a barrier and becomes a place where residue collects, now out of reach. If the part has to last, the silicone mould is more reliable.

Can you certify a part as food safe?

No, and be wary of anyone who does for a made-to-order printed part. Food safety for an object depends on material, process, production environment and intended use, and a workshop printer is not in a certified environment.
