Blind, shower screen and furniture parts nobody sells

The household parts that break and cannot be found: shower rollers, blind stops, wardrobe fittings, feet and drawer runners.

4 min read

There is a whole category of parts nobody sells because they were never sold separately: they came inside the blind, the shower screen or the wardrobe you bought fifteen years ago, and whoever fitted it is long gone. They are small, cheap to reproduce, and they block the use of something big and expensive.

What breaks most in a house

Copy the broken one and the good one

A shower screen has four rollers and a drawer has two runners. When one breaks, the others are the same age with the same wear. Send both: the broken one to show what failed and where, and a good one to measure the real geometry undistorted. And order the full set, not one: it costs little more and you are not back here in three months.

I do not know the brand of my screen or blind. Does it matter?

Hardly at all. With parts like these the brand rarely leads to an available spare, and in any case we copy what is in front of us. The broken part, or a good one from the same set, is enough.

Will a printed roller take the weight of a shower door?

Yes, in the right material and orientation: they are small parts working in compression, which is what a printed part handles best. What must be avoided is printing it so the load tries to peel layers apart, and that is decided when we orient it.

Can you make a fitting for flat-pack furniture?

Yes, and it is a classic: the fitting, dowel or cam that is missing and not sold separately. They are geometrically simple, quick to model and cheap to print, and they save binning a whole unit over one piece of plastic.
